Vlasovite is a very rare zirconium-bearing mineral. The vlasovite offered for sale here occurs in association with a suite of other zirconium minerals, at Sheffield Lake, near Kipawa, Quebec. One of the other zirconium minerals that occurs with vlasovite is eudialyte which is also available on the Alpine Gems website (Eudialyte). Rough vlasovite occurs in massive form, usually encased in eudialyte and is usually heavily fractured and included. A very small portion of this material is suitable for faceting, yielding gems that are typically small, included and fractured. Clean faceted gems of any size are extremely rare.
Vlasovite has a hardness of 6 on Moh's hardness scale, has distinct cleavage and is fairly fragile, making its use in jewellery limited to earrings and pendants. Faceted vlasovite is considered too soft to set in rings.
