HESSONITE GARNET - York River, Bancroft, Ontario

For many years the York river skarn zone had been a popular destination for mineral collectors visiting the Bancroft area. York River has provided many attractive specimens of dark brownish orange dodecahedral crystals of hessonite garnet. Most of this hessonite is opaque to translucent. Very rarely, transparent gemmy areas are encountered within some crystals. These have yielded small faceted gems usually with inclusions and under 1/2 carat. The hessonite gems offered for sale on this page came from crystals collected at York River many years ago.
