The Mount Brussiloff Mine is mined for magesite for use in the refractory and chemical industries. Occasionally fine crystals of magnesite and dolomite along with several other very rare minerals are uncovered from cavities in the magnesite ore. The gems offered for sale on this page were cut from some of these dolomite crystals.
Transparent dolomite is usually colourless, but can occur in shades of light yellow throught to light pink. Dolomite has a hardness of 4 on Moh's hardness scale and has 3 directions of cleavage, making its use in jewellery extremely limited. Dolomite would be very difficult to set into jewellery without scratching, chipping or breaking the stone. If dolomite is set successfully it could possibly be used in earrings and pendants but only if worn with extreme care. Under normal conditions faceted dolomite would be considered too soft and fragile to be worn in jewellery of any kind.
