|
|
During exploration for aquamarine in the early 1990s a pocket of smoky quartz crystals was discovered in the Ash Mountain area, near Cassiar, northern British Columbia. Less than a dozen crystals were found. Crystals ranged in sized up to about 25 cm. The largest crystal weighed about 30 kg!! Crystals were a dark smoky colour with an opaque white layer of milky quartz on the terminations. Some of these crystals had transparent areas in their interiors and when faceted produced dark coloured gems. When heated gently, the dark smoky colour lightens.
