There are several "Emerald Lakes" in Yukon. The one we are referring to here is located in the Hess Mountains about 185 km by air north-northeast of Ross River in central Yukon. High on the cliffs above Emerald Lake are cavities (pockets) that contain crystals of quartz (smoky and citrine), black tourmaline, and rarely apatite and scheelite. Scheelite at Emerald Lake was found mainly as etched, crystal fragments loose in the cavities some of which had small transparent sections. Complete crystals were very rare. Collecting crystals on the cliff faces above Emerald Lake was very exciting. Lots of rope work and climbing was involved, including a 300 m rappel to access one of the pockets!! Yahoo!! The scheelite gems offered for sale here were collected between 1994 and 1996.
Scheelite has a hardness of 4 1/2 to 5, is brittle and heat sensitive, rendering it unsuitable for use in rings. Scheelite can be used in earrings and pendants, but must be set with great care.
