HACKMANITE - York River area, Bancroft, Ontario     Fluorescent & Tenebrescent
Hackmanite is a varietal name for fluorescent sodalite.   Some hackmanite displays tenebrescence as well. Hackmanite from the York River area is opaque and has a white body colour.  It fluoresces bright orange when exposed to LW UV light and under SW UV light it shows a much weaker orange yellow fluorescence.  The most interesting feature of this hackmanite is its tenebrescence.  After several minutes of exposure to SW UV light these gems display patches and fine web-like lines of a deep reddish purple colour.  The colour will fade in minutes when exposed to visible light.

View under normal light. View after approx 5 minutes under SWUV light.
